Some people do not need to take vitamin supplements and can get all the vitamins and minerals they need by eating a healthy, balanced diet. But with the best will in the world, most people often miss out on vital nutrients on a regular basis. Often people avoid vegetables and may overindulge in protein. After a long period your body can suffer and show signs of deficiency. Where the best way is to incorporate a varied diet, it may be wise to supplement your diet with a multivitamin and multimineral.

Many people choose to take supplements but taking too much or taking them for too long could be harmful. Most Health Authorities recommend certain supplements for some groups of people who are at risk of deficiency. Vitamins and minerals, such as iron, calcium and vitamin C, are essential nutrients that your body needs in small amounts to work properly. As a vegetarian, you may be deficient in B12, as it may be lacking in vegetarian/vegan diets. You need to put in the research to ensure you are making the right dietary decisions. There are a number of websites online that can help you in making better choices or you could consult the HSE website for ways to improve your diet and ensure you remain healthy.
